LAHSA is stepping back from its decades-long role as lead homelessness coordinator in LA, handing over critical federal funding, data systems, and homeless counts to the city and county — a move sparked by mounting criticism, HUD investigations, and a push for greater accountability. While LAHSA claims its exit prioritizes unhoused residents and avoids division, the city and county are racing to take control of these vital functions, redirecting hundreds of millions in funds. With operations set to continue through 2027, the real test now lies with LA’s elected leaders to ensure seamless transitions and meaningful results for those most in need.
