233: Lemon was forced to decide

233: Lemon was forced to decide

Author: Scott Johnson & Glassbox Media. October 17, 2025 Duration: 1:24:44
Sometimes you find yourself in a situation that you didn’t ever expect, and you are faced with a decision that you never thought you’d have to make.   Joe was an EMT in New York. He had just finished his evening shift, and he did what he always did after leaving work. He stopped by the local Dunkin’ Donuts for his regular nightly coffee. But this time was a little different – he happened to be carrying his newly acquired carbon monoxide detector with him.   When he entered the store, that detector started sounding an alarm. But Joe was skeptical. There was  only one employee working at this late hour, and Joe asked her if she felt okay. The donut worker said she felt fine, so Joe thought that the detector might be malfunctioning. And he could have just forgotten about it at that point. But he made the decision to double check. He reset that alarm, and got permission to go back and inspect the area near the ovens. Sure enough, this time the detector confirmed dangerous levels of carbon monoxide – and it was all throughout the store.   Joe quickly evacuated the premises and contacted the proper authorities. The decision he made, just on instinct, probably saved the life of that employee.   My guest today is Lemon – yes, just like the fruit. And you’ll hear how she got that nickname. Lemon was suddenly and unexpectedly put in a place of making a life-changing decision.   And she had to do that while she was at home, and her house was on fire.     Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/233   Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. There’s a moment in many lives when everything changes in an instant-a sudden encounter, a split-second decision, a catastrophic event. What Was That Like-True Stories. Real People. is built entirely around those moments. Host Scott Johnson, alongside Meredith Hackwith Edwards, steps back to let people narrate their own extraordinary experiences in their own words. This isn’t a narrated documentary or a dramatized re-enactment; it’s raw, first-person testimony. You’ll hear the intricate details of surviving a grizzly bear attack, the chilling silence after an engine fails mid-flight, or the profound disorientation of being caught in a public tragedy. Each conversation delves deep, not just into the event itself, but into the emotional and psychological journey that followed. The focus is on the human spirit’s resilience, exploring how individuals process trauma, find courage they never knew they had, and ultimately rebuild. This podcast sits at a compelling intersection of personal journal, societal study, and true human drama, offering an intimate window into realities most of us can scarcely imagine. By listening, you’re granted a privileged seat at a kitchen table conversation where someone is finally ready to share the full, unvarnished truth of what they endured and how it shaped them.
