Andrea Simon: Anthropology and Business

Andrea Simon: Anthropology and Business

Author: Veronica Malolos, CCIM August 23, 2024 Duration: 21:15

I had the pleasure of speaking with Andi Simon this week on Women Influencers. Andi is the founder of Simon Associates Management Consultants LLC (SAMC), which she founded in 2002 to apply anthropology’s methods, tools, and theory to businesses in need of change.

We discussed how she was being trained to take over the family retail business when she went off to college at Penn State and discovered Anthropology by chance. After completing her undergraduate work at Columbia, she went right into a doctoral program. She studied how people change, particularly immigrants modifying and adapting their cultures into the cultures of their new countries. Then, while being perfectly content being a professor, she was introduced by her husband Andy to a whole bunch of folks at Citibank who asked her to come on board and help them change.

That kick started her career as a consultant, which has been her focus for 22 years and counting. She has also penned 3 books on the subject! We talked about the challenges of being a woman in business, Andi’s influence and strategies to effect change, and why I started my podcast.

Hosted by Veronica Malolos, CCIM-Founder and CEO of Capital Stack Real Estate Group-the Women Influencers podcast moves beyond surface-level success stories to explore the nuanced realities of leadership, ambition, and personal philosophy. Each conversation delves into the practical strategies and formative experiences of women who have shaped their fields, with a particular lens on business and commercial real estate. These are not just interviews; they are deep dives into the decisions, setbacks, and pivotal moments that define a career. Veronica’s background as an operator in the Greater Orlando market informs a grounded, insightful dialogue that resonates whether you’re building a company, navigating a corporate ladder, or redefining your own path. The discussions naturally span categories from concrete business tactics to broader cultural and societal themes, reflecting the multifaceted lives these influencers lead. This podcast serves as a resource for anyone seeking authentic perspective, emphasizing that influence is cultivated through resilience and insight as much as through achievement. Listen for candid reflections on balancing ambition with life’s other demands, the philosophical underpinnings of a leadership style, and the often-unspoken challenges of carving out space in competitive industries. It’s a series dedicated to amplifying voices that not only succeed but also thoughtfully pave the way for others.
