Αθλος (athlos) in ancient Greek meant an achievement in something that was awarded with a prize. It wasn't only connected with sports or games but also with great acts of bravery, labour, as in the twelve labours of Hercules. Anything that required mental and physical training and was at quite a difficult level. The person carrying this labour forward was an ΑΘΛΗΤΗΣ/ATHLETE
