Hello, and welcome to Your Greek Word On A Sunday, a weekly, bite-size podcast for anyone curious on language, etymology and connections. I am your host, Emmanuela Lia and wherever you are in the world, if you want to entertain your brain for a few minutes, this is the podcast for you. Let's Go!

Pro (προ) is a Greek preposition and it means ‘before´. Γραφείν (grafin) is an Ancient Greek infinitive meaning ‘to write’. From their combination comes the noun πρόγραμμα (programma) and it originally meant to write a public notice before it takes effect. That meaning, exact word and spelling was kept in old Latin. But when the French started using it, everything but the meaning was kept and that’s the word that came to England in the 19th century. Meaning the public announcement of the list of people (of any art form) taking part in public performances. The word is used in Greek today for both that and the word ‘schedule’.
