About ABC Classic FM
ABC Classic FM - known on air simply as ABC Classic since a 2019 rebrand - is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's national classical music station, on air since 24 January 1976 as ABC-FM. It was the ABC's first experiment in FM broadcasting, launched before most commercial stations touched the band, and the first Australian broadcaster to use satellite transmissions.
The programming mix spans orchestral works, opera, recitals and live concerts, with around half of everything played performed by Australian musicians. Calendar highlights include the famous Classic 100 countdowns, where the audience votes and the results take over the schedule, plus AusMusic Month each November.
Born of a model inspired by BBC Radio 3 and run from studios established at Collinswood in Adelaide, the station now also feeds podcasts, live events and the ABC Classic record label. English-language and free to stream online, it makes an easy classical web radio listen - five decades of fine music for Australia and the world.
