The trial worked: the station became permanent in 1991, added a Kununurra outpost in 1997 - begun in the back bedroom of a Sandalwood Street house - and now transmits as 6BE on 675 AM to the whole region.

The coverage map is one of Australian radio's widest: Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek and Kununurra, plus Christmas Island and the Cocos Islands on the side. Programming is ABC Local talk with cyclone-season duty running deep - the old studio famously leaked during emergency broadcasts - and the station helped seed Aboriginal community radio across the Kimberley.

English-language and free through the ABC listen app and live web stream, it keeps the far north-west connected - an easy remote-region radio listen online, from Cable Beach to anywhere in the world.
