About 1XXR 2XX 98.3 FM
2XX 98.3 FM - 1XXR on today's licence - is one of Australia's longest-running community broadcasters, on air in Canberra since 2 July 1976. It grew out of the Australian National University's student radio station, starting life as 2XX on AM 1010 from two studios at the Drill Hall Gallery in Acton.
The AM years ran 1010 then 1008 kHz before the move to 98.3 FM, where a 32-kilowatt signal now covers the capital; the format stays community - a broad church of volunteer programs in many languages and genres, mostly English.
Canberra's community station carries the city's alternative voices: politics beyond the press gallery, local music, multicultural and specialist shows that commercial networks would never schedule. Free to stream online, it makes an easy community web radio listen - nearly fifty years of Canberra community radio, from the ANU campus to anywhere in the world.
