Hoodoo Gurus
Hoodoo Gurus: Australian Garage Rock Pioneers
Hoodoo Gurus are an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1981, blending garage rock, power pop, and indie rock into a distinctive, energetic sound. The band achieved significant commercial success in their home country, with multiple albums reaching the Top 10 on the Australian charts and earning platinum certifications.
Early career
The band was founded by frontman Dave Faulkner after the dissolution of his punk group The Victims. Originally named Le Hoodoo Gurus, the initial lineup featured Faulkner alongside guitarist Brad Shepherd, bassist Clyde Bramley, and drummer James Baker, crafting a style that referenced 1960s garage rock and surf music with a modern, witty twist.
Breakthrough
The Hoodoo Gurus' 1984 debut album, Stoneage Romeos, became an instant cult classic and is widely regarded as a landmark of Australian rock. Released on the independent label Big Time, the album's sharp songwriting and raw energy laid the foundation for their career, eventually being listed in the book "100 Best Australian Albums."
Key tracks
My Girl - The lead single from Stoneage Romeos became an alternative anthem and a staple of Australian radio.
Like Wow - Wipeout! - This track from their 1985 album Mars Needs Guitars! showcased their knack for catchy, riff-driven power pop.
What's My Scene? - The 1987 single became one of their biggest hits, topping the Australian charts and achieving platinum status.
Miss Freelove '69 - A later-career highlight from 1991's Kinky album, demonstrating their enduring melodic strength.
Bittersweet - This 1994 single marked a successful return after a brief hiatus and became another major radio hit.
The band's success continued through the late 1980s and early 1990s with albums like Blow Your Cool! and Magnum Cum Louder. After a break in the mid-90s, Hoodoo Gurus reconvened in 2004 and have remained active, touring and releasing new material, including the 2010 album Purity of Essence and 2022's Chariot of the Gods.
Fans of Hoodoo Gurus' guitar-driven, melodic rock may also enjoy fellow Australian acts like The Church, who share a similar psychedelic-tinged rock foundation. The energetic power pop of You Am I offers a comparable raw and melodic intensity. Listeners might also appreciate the garage rock revivalism of Radio Birdman, an earlier influential Sydney band.
