Regis is the primary alias of British producer Karl O'Connor, a foundational figure in the development of industrial techno. Originating from Birmingham, UK, his work is synonymous with the stark, rhythmic, and confrontational style known as the Birmingham sound, influencing countless artists within the electronic and techno genres.

Early career

Emerging from the post-punk and industrial music scenes in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Karl O'Connor began his musical journey before formally adopting the Regis moniker. His early involvement was deeply rooted in the underground tape-trading culture and the visceral energy of clubs like Birmingham's House of God, where he later became a resident DJ, helping to cement the city's distinct sonic identity.

Breakthrough

Regis's breakthrough came with a series of seminal releases in the mid-1990s on labels like Downwards, which he co-founded, and Tresor. His 1996 EP "Gymnastics" is often cited as a landmark release, perfectly encapsulating the punishing, minimalist, and funk-driven industrial techno that defined his sound. This period established him as a central force in the global techno underground, with his productions and DJ sets gaining a reputation for their relentless intensity and architectural precision.
