Noshing Narratives: Culinary Characters Unlocked

Author: Matthew Gray - 50TastesOfGray August 10, 2024 Duration: 1:12:44
In this episode of 50 Tastes Of Gray, I had the immense pleasure of welcoming back the legendary David Page, the original creator and producer of the iconic show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. This was David’s second appearance on the podcast, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of spectacular.David and I share a lifelong love (and perhaps an addiction) for food, flavor, history, and cooking. Our bond goes beyond just our professional lives; we both grew up in Jewish households filled with humor, sarcasm, hostility, and passion. With decades of experience in media and entertainment—David in TV news and journalism, and myself in hosting and talk-radio—we have a unique connection that makes our conversations truly special.David is quite the talker, and if I didn’t want to spend the entire show saying “wow,” “right,” “really?” and “that’s interesting,” I had to be a bit more conversationally assertive. But that’s the beauty of our dynamic—I can razz David without him missing a beat. We tease, laugh, tell stories, commiserate, communicate, listen, learn, and inform each other. It’s a great connection, and I’d wager he has the best time on my show than any other he’s ever done.We discussed a wide range of topics, including food, travel, therapy, family, good timing, hard work, not letting the perfect be the enemy of the good, health challenges, food ingredients, a bit of politics, and so much more. It was a conversation filled with depth, humor, and profound insights.About David Page: David Page is the President and Executive Producer of Page Productions and the Host and Executive Producer of Culinary Characters Unlocked. Marvin Lender, who, along with his brothers, introduced non-New York America to bagels after figuring out how to mass-produce and freeze them. And Me, Yours Truly, Matthew Gray, will be featured very shortly on David's show.David’s prior television experience includes decades in network news at both ABC and NBC, covering some of the biggest stories on the planet (including walking through the Berlin Wall the night it opened) and control-room producing Good Morning America. Aloha from Hawaii! I’m Matthew Gray, a lifelong chef and radio guy, and this is 50 Tastes Of Gray. Think of this podcast as a long, comfortable table where smart conversation is always on the menu. Each episode is built around a generous helping of stories and laughter, served with genuine warmth, a sharp wit, and just a dash of mischief. I sit down with fascinating people from all corners of the creative world-chefs, artists, musicians, thinkers, and anyone with a compelling story about how they live. Naturally, we talk about flavor and food, but the discussion always expands to explore what truly feeds the soul: curiosity, creativity, and the messy, beautiful connections that define our relationships and culture. You'll hear unexpected insights that blend the arts, comedy, and observations on society, all flowing from relaxed, in-depth chats. This isn't a lecture or an interview checklist; it's the kind of talk that happens when interesting people are given the space to dig into what matters, finding the humor and humanity in everything from a perfect meal to a life-changing idea. Tune in for a podcast that feels like a great dinner party-nourishing, unpredictable, and deeply human.
