Cult of the Cat & Animal Act

Cult of the Cat & Animal Act

Author: The Pensky File September 1, 2021 Duration: 1:11:05

We’re continuing our big block of animal episodes this week on the BATTASS Podcast, as Catwoman gets caught up with a crazy cat-based cult in, well, Cult of the Cat, and Nightwing heads back to the circus he once called home in Animal Act. Not sure what it is about animals this season, but we sure have had a run of them!

First up, in Cult of the Cat, Catwoman gets caught up with some really nasty ninjas who are agents of a fanatical cult with a feline obsession. Batman steps in to help but quickly gets thrown into the lion’s den (literally) when he has to fight a gigantic tiger, seemingly to the death! Catwoman’s really stepped in it this time, but potentially not as much as the character designers in this ep who have outfitted these ninja cat cultists with retractable claws that seem very much like they would make a certain SNIKT when they open!

Next up in Animal Act, the animals from Nightwing’s old circus are inexplicably committing crimes, and it’s up to Dick and Tim to get to the bottom of what’s going on! It’s a blast from the past for Dick as they head back to the circus he was raised in, catching up with some old friends who quickly are mind-controlled into becoming new enemies! Hats off to the Mad Hatter who’s tried some truly unique strategies of robbery in this one, but all it gets him, in the end, is a deposit of five knuckles to the bank of his face!

These are a couple of perfectly fine episodes, but they both seem to leave a lot on the table, especially Animal Act. Dick heading back to the circus is something they’ve never really done on the show, and it would have been nice for them to spend a bit more time there with all the fun new characters we meet from his past. So cough up some hairballs, get your popcorn and crackerjacks, and join us for Cult of the Cat and Animal Act!

Ever wonder what happens when two working comic book artists sit down to talk about the definitive cartoon version of the Dark Knight? That’s the simple, compelling premise behind BATTASS: The Batman The Animated Series Show Podcast. Hosts Clay McCormack and Sean Murphy bring their insider’s perspective from the drawing board to every discussion, breaking down each installment of the legendary series. Their conversations are less like formal reviews and more like you’re overhearing a deep, passionate, and often very funny debate between two experts who genuinely love the material. You’ll hear them trace the artistic influences in the show’s iconic style, analyze the sharp writing that appealed to both kids and adults, and share personal insights into why certain characters or storylines resonate so powerfully within the broader world of comics. This isn’t a rushed recap; it’s a thoughtful, episode-by-episode excavation of what made Batman: The Animated Series a cultural touchstone. The result is a consistently engaging podcast that feels both educational and entertaining, offering a unique lens on a show many of us thought we already knew everything about. New episodes from The Pensky File dive into a single chapter of the animated saga, making it a perfect companion whether you’re revisiting the series or discovering it for the first time.
