274-Happy New Year- Buddhism in daily life

Author: Shaolin-Rainer January 1, 2023 Duration: 4:21

Happy New Year

I would like to start with a quote from the Meta Sutra (goodness teaching):

MAY ALL BEINGS BE FREE FROM SUFFERING, MAY WHATEVER THEY HAVE GAINED NOT BE LOST, NOT BE DIMINISHED, NOT BE DESTROYED. ALL BEINGS ARE THE INHERITORS OF THEIR OWN KARMA.

But does it really feel like a new year? Or is it simply a new day?

When I bought the non-alcoholic champagne for our New Year's celebration a few days ago, and saw the masses of high-proof alcoholic beverages, I realized that most people have to run away from themselves, especially on holidays their own ego seems especially hard to bear.

How can it be that "celebrating" with oneself has been replaced "shutting down, what is going on in our society?"

Chan masters used to cry in the evening because the day was now lost. Yesterday was last year, today is a new year, so we should not lose another year to "wake up".

When it snows on New Year's Eve, New Year is not far away
