Über die Grenzen von Proxmox hinaus: Selber VMs mit QEMU basteln (mrmcd26)

Wer VMs betreiben will, greift in der Linux-Welt üblicherweise zu Gnome Boxes, virt-manager, systemd-vmspawn oder Proxmox. Doch sind all das auch nur (teilweise) Wrapper um QEMU herum, die mit Magie dafür sorgen, dass alles "einfach funktioniert". Wir lassen die fancy CLIs und GUIs hinter uns und basteln uns eine Maschine direkt mit QEMU. Den allerersten Kontakt mit VMs hatten viele von uns vermutlich mit VirtualBox. Vielleicht gefolgt von Gnome Boxes, wer es ein bisschen mehr custom haben wollte, dann mit virt-manager, für weniger custom und weniger GUI systemd-vmspawn und oft endet die Reise dann bei einem Server mit Proxmox. Doch als Unterbau trifft man an vielen Stellen auf diese eine Software: QEMU Wie mächtig QEMU ist, sieht man daran, was GUIs wie das von virt-manager alles an Features bieten. Wir gehen heute allerdings noch mehr custom, als virt-manager es könnte. Wir brechen aus den Grenzen von Proxmox und co. aus und machen uns die Finger schmutzig. Wir bauen unsere eigene VM, direkt mit QEMU, ohne Mittelsmann, ohne fertige Scripte, von Grund auf. Dazu gehört natürlich erstmal, die virtuelle Hardware zusammen zu stecken, aber auch Vorbereitungen auf dem Host, um dem Gast Netzwerk, Platte und Ausgabe zur Verfügung stellen zu können. Und wenn wir gerade dabei sind, können wir die VM auch gleich an systemd hängen, um sie darüber zu starten und zu stoppen und den Output in eine tmux-Session packen, um ihn jederzeit aufrufen zu können.
