Episode 166 – Your Marketing Check Up

Episode 166 – Your Marketing Check Up

Author: Custom Apparel Startups March 15, 2022 Duration: 53:12

Once a year you go to the Dr for a check up. What do they do? They will listen to your heart, check your lungs, have you do a blood test. They are looking for anything out of the ordinary, even if you don't notice it. If anything is out of the ordinary, you take action to fix it... before it's a bigger problem.

This is the purpose of a Marketing Check Up

How healthy is your marketing? Is anything broken ? Is there any information incorrect? Is there something that isn't a big deal now, but could be if not addressed?

Mark's Story & Inspiration for this episode: Here's what I run into on a very regular basis. ESPECIALLY if a company relies on word of mouth of some kind for new business and they want to grow using digital marketing - everything, or the most important things, are broken.

Out of the last 4 businesses I reviewed their "marketing" presence:

  • 3 had contact forms that didn't work. - didn't record or send a lead.
  • 2 didn't have google my business profiles
  • 4 didn't have content devoted to seo only
  • 1 didn’t have control of their FB/IG pages
  • 1 had their contact form email going to someone that hadn't worked there in years

So here are the thing you need to check right now:

Does your website work? Log into the back end to see…

  • is there anything broken
  • does it need updating
  • look for red exclamations and yellow warnings, etc
  • Click through your website and look for broken pages or links

Is your website info correct?

  • You may say online you offer a service that isn't true anymore
  • You may recommend a product, but now you have a new recommendation
  • Your address or email might have changed
  • Overall check that everything it says is correct

Check your listings (Paid and Free)

  • Google My Business
  • Bing Places
  • Yelp
  • Facebook, Insta, Linked in
  • Anywhere else you have listed your business. this might also be like local chamber of commerce

Check your Print materials

  • Business cards
  • Letterhead
  • Flyers, Posters, Banners

Check emails

  • Email signatures
  • Marketing emails

You should make up a schedule that rolls through all of these depending how critical they are to your business. If you rarely send out emails you might only need to check every few months, but your website might be busy which means you check monthly. If you print a banner for a school once a year, maybe just check that every 6 months.

P.S. Also check your voicemail!

There’s a certain magic in turning a blank t-shirt or hat into something people are excited to wear, but the path from that first spark of an idea to running a sustainable company is rarely straightforward. Custom Apparel Startups digs into that journey, focusing on the practical realities that new founders often miss. While passion for design and decoration is essential, this podcast operates on the belief that understanding the operational backbone-the "business of the business"-is what separates a fleeting side hustle from a thriving enterprise. Each episode brings conversations and insights aimed at those who have the drive and perhaps a modest budget, but who might lack a formal business plan or years of industry experience. You’ll hear about navigating supplier relationships, managing cash flow, effective marketing on a shoestring, and the technology that can streamline a small decorating operation. It’s built for the entrepreneur who knows their way around a heat press or screen but wants to build a firmer foundation for growth. The tone is straightforward and rooted in a genuine appreciation for the field, avoiding overly theoretical advice in favor of actionable steps. Tuning into this podcast means getting a regular dose of grounded perspective, reminding you that a successful custom apparel venture is crafted with equal parts creative vision and operational savvy.
