Martin Donnelly - The F1 Driver who 'probably should be dead'

Martin Donnelly - The F1 Driver who 'probably should be dead'

Author: Paramex Digital February 27, 2023 Duration: 1:26:56

This week, F1 racing driver Martin Donnelly joins John Marcar and a very special guest host Miles Lacey for the latest Driven Chat Podcast. Martin Donnelly is perhaps best known as the survivor of a horrifying 170mph crash whilst testing his Lotus F1 car at the Jerez Circuit in 1990. It was a crash that would end his F1 career but against all odds, not his life.

In this week's podcast, John and Miles speak to Martin about his unorthodox route to F1, coming from a small town in Northern Ireland amidst the infamous 'troubles' of the 1970s and 80s and learn how a young opportunist ended up competing in Formula 3 and Formula 3000 before later signing a contract with the globally renowned Chapman Family to drive for Lotus in Formula 1.

Martin shares some fantastic stories of his younger years and takes us through to the fateful day that ended his career with his own personal account of events and the week leading up to the incident.

For a while, the drivenchat podcast served as the weekly audio companion to the Driven platform, wrapping up the automotive world into candid conversations. Each episode paired the insights of a special guest from across the industry with the distinct perspectives of its three hosts. Listeners heard automotive writer, producer, and presenter John Marcar alongside automotive and lifestyle photographer Amy Heynes, with analysis from a racing driver and vehicle dynamics expert. This combination meant discussions naturally flowed from technical deep-dives into engineering and performance to the broader culture and style surrounding cars, all grounded in genuine expertise. The podcast has since concluded its run, with new episodes continuing under the refreshed banner of The Driven Podcast. The existing library of drivenchat episodes remains a compelling archive, capturing specific moments and voices from the motoring scene through relaxed yet informed dialogue. It was a show where passion for cars was the starting point, not the entire destination, often veering into the personal stories and unexpected tangents that make the automotive community so diverse. Produced by Paramex Digital, the series sits within the leisure and automotive categories, offering a backstage pass to the people who design, drive, photograph, and obsess over vehicles of all kinds.
