Ritch Shydner’s First Time

Ritch Shydner’s First Time

Author: The MESH December 10, 2020 Duration: 56:01
If you’re a comic, you most likely own a copy of “I Killed: True Stories of the Road from America’s Top Comics,” a book of short stories compiled by comedy legend Ritch Shydner. Over a 30-year career, Ritch has seen it all and done it all. We met after I read (and loved) his second book, “Kicking through the Ashses.” We discuss his books, doing comedy at a time when it wasn’t even called “stand-up” yet, the comedy boom of the 80s, open-mics to being on Carson and hanging with Dangerfield.

Ever wonder what actually happens the moment someone decides to become a comedian? I Guess I’ll Do It with Pat House digs into that exact turning point, pulling up a chair for candid, one-on-one chats with comics about the influences that first made them laugh and the nerve-wracking leap to their very first open mic. Hosted by Pat House from The MESH, each episode stays focused and concise, avoiding long tangents to zero in on a single topic-whether that’s swapping horror stories from grimy comedy club green rooms, debating favorite legendary performers, or unpacking the unique blend of joy and terror that defines life on stage. You’ll hear the real, unvarnished shop talk from working comedians, the kind of stories usually shared after a show over a drink. It’s a backstage pass to the craft, all delivered in short, digestible conversations that get straight to the heart of what drives people to tell jokes for a living. Tune in to this podcast for an authentic, grounded look at the world of stand-up, one specific story at a time.
