Murder on the Appalachian Trail - Part 1

Murder on the Appalachian Trail - Part 1

Author: Locations Unknown January 14, 2020 Duration: 48:27
Sept 13th, 1990 - Biff and Cindi Bowen were at the halfway point of their 2,144 mile hike down the Appalachian Trail, when the couple stopped for supplies in Duncannon, Pennsylvania, before their trek up nearby Cove Mountain.  The two planned to spend the night in a three-sided log shelter along the trail.  As the couple hiked down an incline behind the shelter, Biff sensed that “Something was wrong,”.  He was so overcome with an uneasy sense of dread that he positioned his hiking pole as a weapon before walking around the cabins open side.  On the open side of the cabin, the couple found supplies frantically scattered around the murdered bodies of two hikers. The Bowens walked onto the scene of a grisly double murder.  The victims, two experienced hikers—Molly LaRue, 25, of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and her boyfriend, Geoffrey Hood, 26, of Signal Mountain, Tennessee.  Hood had been shot multiple times with a .22 caliber revolver.  LaRue had been tied up, tortured, raped and stabbed eight times in the neck and upper back.  Join us this week as we investigate the case of Hood and LaRue. Join us in Episode 17 for part 2 of "Murder on the Appalachian Trail", where we wrap up the case of Hood & LaRue. Locations Unknown ventures into the silent, vast spaces where people have simply gone missing. Hosts Mike & Joe guide each episode through a specific case, piecing together timelines from the final known moments, through the often-frustrating official searches, and into the lingering questions that haunt families and park rangers alike. This isn't just a true crime podcast; it’s a close look at the intersection of human error, unpredictable nature, and the peculiar geography of places like dense national forests and isolated mountain ranges that can swallow a person whole. You’ll hear about the decisions made in the critical hours, the terrain that complicated everything, and the community of experts and amateurs who keep looking. The show naturally explores how these landscapes, while beautiful, hold secrets, making the wilderness itself a central character in every story. Tune in for a respectful, detailed examination of stories that end not with a conclusion, but with an open map and a deepened mystery. The podcast digs into the cultural fascination with these vanishings and what they reveal about our relationship with the wild, remote corners of the country.
