Yuba City Five - Plumas National Forest

Yuba City Five - Plumas National Forest

Author: Locations Unknown September 17, 2019 Duration: 1:12:04
On February 24th, 1978 a group of five adults set out from Yuba City California heading north to Chico to watch a college basketball game.  After the conclusion of the game, the five men were to return to Yuba City, where they had a basketball tournament the next day. What unfolded next in the following days and weeks is shocking and unexplainable.  Instead of driving back to Chico, their car was found abandoned, deep in the Plumas National Forest on a high mountain dirt road, more than 50 miles in the wrong direction near the Rogers Cow Camp site. Searchers attempted to find the missing men, but hampered by severe weather, the search was called off after only a few days.  Months later, a group of motorcyclists made a grizzly discovery, almost 20 miles deeper into the forest, near a Forest Service trailer used used by backpackers for shelter.  Adding to the mystery, several locals claimed to have seen the missing men after their disappearance, with one man claiming to have experienced a very eerie, almost paranormal sighting near the location of the abandoned car.  What caused the five men to drive into the Forest that night? Why did they abandon their car and hike deeper into the forest? Was someone or something chasing them? Join us this week as we try to figure out what happened to the Yuba City Five. Locations Unknown ventures into the silent, vast spaces where people have simply gone missing. Hosts Mike & Joe guide each episode through a specific case, piecing together timelines from the final known moments, through the often-frustrating official searches, and into the lingering questions that haunt families and park rangers alike. This isn't just a true crime podcast; it’s a close look at the intersection of human error, unpredictable nature, and the peculiar geography of places like dense national forests and isolated mountain ranges that can swallow a person whole. You’ll hear about the decisions made in the critical hours, the terrain that complicated everything, and the community of experts and amateurs who keep looking. The show naturally explores how these landscapes, while beautiful, hold secrets, making the wilderness itself a central character in every story. Tune in for a respectful, detailed examination of stories that end not with a conclusion, but with an open map and a deepened mystery. The podcast digs into the cultural fascination with these vanishings and what they reveal about our relationship with the wild, remote corners of the country.
