Examined: The Backfire Effect

The story of Mitrice Richardson's disappearance begins at a Malibu restaurant in 2009, but it opens a door into a much deeper and more unsettling reality. Lost Hills: Dark Canyon, a podcast from Western Sound and Pushkin Industries, uses that single, tragic case as a starting point to investigate the stark contrasts that define this iconic California coastline. This isn't just a true crime story; it's a documentary series that peels back the glamorous veneer of billionaires and celebrities to examine the systemic shadows and forgotten corners that exist just off the Pacific Coast Highway. Listeners will hear a meticulous examination of the night Mitrice was arrested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department at the Lost Hills Station and then released into the darkness, vanishing without a trace. The narrative follows the desperate search that unfolded over the ensuing eleven months, but it also expands to ask broader questions about accountability, perception, and what a community chooses to see-or ignore. Each episode of this podcast builds a haunting portrait of a place where paradise and peril intersect, weaving together personal tragedy with larger themes of society and culture. The reporting is persistent and layered, offering a sobering look at how easily someone can fall through the cracks, even in one of the world's most watched and wealthiest enclaves.
