He, along with guitarist Brian Robertson marked the beginning of the band's most successful period and influenced countless bands including Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2, The Cure and more. He also co-founded Black Star Riders and recorded with ASIA, Rolling Band, Supertramp and has also continued to performing with Thin Lizzy.
