S02_EP11: Lunar Eclipse Story from Bangladesh

S02_EP11: Lunar Eclipse Story from Bangladesh

Author: Shilpa DasGupta February 22, 2024 Duration: 30:30

Bangladesh!! A country once described as  "a sleeping beauty emerging from mists and water" by the Chinese traveler and poet Huen Tsang. Mother earth has been generous on this country with an abundance of natural resources, widespread greenery, beautiful coastlines and an extensive range of flora and fauna. Bangladesh is that unique country that fought a long war and gained victory for the sake of their mother language, Bengali. And because of this beautiful nation, February 21 is globally identified as the ‘International Mother Language Day’. And in this episode, also going live on February 21, in honor of the Mother Language Day (known as ‘Bhasha Dibosh’ in Bengali), I, a proud Bengali from one part of Bengal (West Bengal, India), pay homage to another part of Bengal (Bangladesh). While borders divide the two Bengals, language and culture have kept them united forever. Bangladesh also happens to be the country of my roots. This is where both my parents and most of my family originally come from. So in this episode, I have picked a very old and rare folktale to pay tribute to my roots and the unique demographic diversity of Bangladesh. There’s a particular magic in hearing a story told aloud, a tradition that connects us across generations and geography. Ohh Folk!!, hosted by Shilpa DasGupta, is built on that very magic. Each episode is a journey into the rich and often overlooked corners of global folklore, reviving rare tales that might otherwise fade from memory. This isn't just a collection of stories you've heard before; it's an excavation of narrative treasures from specific nations and indigenous tribes, shared with the warmth and cadence of oral storytelling. As you listen, you’ll be transported by the tales themselves and then offered a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes into the cultures from which they sprang. A core hope for this podcast is to pass these timeless pieces on to new, young listeners, ensuring the tradition continues vibrantly. Tuning in feels like being part of a quiet, steadfast effort to keep these voices alive, one story at a time. The result is a deeply engaging experience that satisfies a curiosity for both narrative and cultural heritage, making Ohh Folk!! a unique listen for anyone drawn to the threads that weave our world’s societies together.
