286. Teen Won’t Go to School? What to Say That Morning

286. Teen Won’t Go to School? What to Say That Morning

Author: Therese Connolly August 6, 2026 Duration: 13:51

Your teen looks at you and says:

“I’m not going to school.”

Before you argue, lecture, threaten consequences, or immediately agree to let them stay home, pause.

What you say next can either increase the power struggle—or help your teenager move toward the next manageable step.

In this Quick Reset episode of The Single Parenting Reset Show, Tess Connolly gives you five calm, practical scripts for the most common school-morning situations.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL LEARN WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR TEEN:

• Flatly refuses to go to school

• Complains of a stomachache or headache

• Becomes panicked or overwhelmed

• Asks for “just one mental health day”

• Says they are being bullied or feel unsafe

THE QUICK RESET

When your teen says:

“I’m not going to school,”

try:

“I hear that you do not want to go, and I believe this feels hard. School is still the plan. Would you like me to drive you, or are you taking the bus?”

This response acknowledges your teen’s distress without reopening the entire school-attendance decision.

The goal is not to dismiss anxiety or force a teenager into a medically unsafe or dangerous situation.

The goal is to:

• Acknowledge the distress

• Communicate confidence

• Move toward the next manageable step

Sometimes that next step is getting dressed.

Sometimes it is getting into the car.

Sometimes it is meeting a counselor at the school entrance or following a coordinated return-to-school plan.

And sometimes it is stopping to investigate a medical, mental-health, bullying, or safety concern.

One important reminder from this episode is:

“Let’s make today smaller instead of making it disappear.”

Your teenager does not always need to feel completely calm before taking the next step. They need to know that you see how difficult this feels—and that you believe they can move through it with appropriate support.

Go back and listen to Episode 285 for the deeper conversation about normal reluctance, anxiety, school avoidance, appropriate accommodations, and when to seek professional support.
