288. What to Say When Your Teen Won’t Get Off Their Phone: 5 Scripts

Author: Therese Connolly August 13, 2026 Duration: 11:30

You have asked your teen to put down their phone three times. They have barely looked up, and “just one more minute” is quickly turning into another family argument.

What can you say without yelling, lecturing, or giving up on the boundary?

In this practical Quick Reset, Tess Connolly, LCSW, gives single parents five specific scripts to use when their tween or teen:

  • Ignores the first request to put the phone down
  • Repeatedly asks for “just one more minute”
  • Says everyone else’s parents allow more phone time
  • Gets angry and calls you controlling
  • Sneaks the phone back after bedtime

Tess also explains why shorter, calmer language works better than repeating, threatening, or trying to convince your teen that the boundary is fair.

You will learn how to acknowledge what your teen is feeling without removing the limit, offer appropriate choices without reopening the negotiation, and create consequences that are connected, specific, and time-limited.

Your teen does not have to like the boundary for the boundary to be appropriate. You can protect the relationship and hold the limit at the same time.

The relationship is the intervention—and calm, clear boundaries are part of that relationship.

Listen to Episode 287, Teen Screen Time Limits: How to Reset Phone Boundaries Without Constant Fights, for the larger framework behind today’s scripts.
