289. Teen Vaping: The First Conversation to Have Before Giving a Consequence

289. Teen Vaping: The First Conversation to Have Before Giving a Consequence

Author: Therese Connolly August 18, 2026 Duration: 25:05

You find a vape in your teenager’s backpack, bedroom, sweatshirt, or car.

Within seconds, fear takes over:

How long has this been happening?

Where did they get it?

Is this nicotine or marijuana?

Are they addicted?

What else are they hiding?

You may want to immediately take their phone, ground them, demand the whole story, or deliver a long lecture about what vaping can do to their health.

But the first few minutes of this conversation matter.

If your teen feels cornered, shamed, or interrogated, you may get denial, blame, or partial truths. That does not mean you should ignore the vaping or avoid consequences. It means that before you decide what response is appropriate, you need enough information to understand what you are actually dealing with.

In this episode of The Single Parenting Reset Show, Tess Connolly, LCSW, explains how to begin the first conversation after discovering that your tween or teen has been vaping.

You will learn:

  • Why you should regulate yourself before confronting your teen
  • The difference between starting with facts and starting with accusations
  • What to say when your teen insists the vape belongs to someone else
  • Five questions that can help you understand how frequently your teen is vaping
  • How to explore whether vaping is connected to stress, anxiety, social pressure, focus, or nicotine cravings
  • Why experimentation, regular use, and possible nicotine dependence require different responses
  • How to create consequences that are related, reasonable, and focused on safety
  • When to involve your teen’s pediatrician or another healthcare professional
  • How to repair the conversation if you already yelled, threatened, or reacted out of fear

The goal is not to become permissive about vaping.

The goal is to respond in a way that gives you the best chance of getting honest information, protecting your teen’s health, and addressing the real reason the vaping is happening.

You can hold a clear boundary and preserve the relationship at the same time.

The relationship is the intervention.
