296. Teen Won’t Put the Phone Down? What to Say Without Starting a Fight

296. Teen Won’t Put the Phone Down? What to Say Without Starting a Fight

Author: Therese Connolly September 11, 2026 Duration: 12:26

You tell your teen it’s time to put the phone away.

They say:

“One more minute.”

You wait.

Then you ask again.

And suddenly a simple phone limit turns into a full-blown power struggle.

If this happens in your house, the answer usually isn’t repeating yourself louder, threatening a bigger consequence, or grabbing the phone out of your teen’s hand.

In this Quick Reset, I’m giving you a simple three-part response you can use when your tween or teen won’t get off their phone:

Connection.

Limit.

Choice.

You’ll also learn what to say when they agree to “two more minutes” and still don’t stop — and what to do when they flat-out refuse.

You’ll walk away with exact language to help you:

Set a phone limit without immediately creating a power struggle

Give your teen autonomy without giving up the boundary

Stop repeating yourself five times

Respond when your teen says no

Use consequences that are connected to the actual problem

Come back later for a calmer repair conversation

Protect the relationship while still parenting firmly

Because your teen does not have to like the boundary for you to hold it.

And you do not have to damage the relationship in order to enforce it.

The relationship is the intervention.
