Good morning. Alaska. I'm Michael Nally.
Step outside and you'll feel winter's grip tightening across the Last Frontier. We picked up about half an inch of snow overnight. And temperatures are hovering around 18 degrees in Southcentral. But folks, that cold you're feeling? It's just the beginning.
Down in Southeast Alaska, snow showers are pounding the Panhandle. Juneau and Sitka could see 2 to 4 inches by tonight, with the heaviest bands hitting the coast. Winds are calming after yesterday's storm, but visibility drops fast when those snow squalls roll through.
Southcentral sees a chance of snow showers this morning, then skies clear out. Anchorage tops out near 21 degrees with southwest winds gusting to 25 miles an hour. Tonight? We drop hard — down to 3 degrees with north winds.
The Interior is where the real cold story lives. Fairbanks struggles to hit 4 degrees today under mostly cloudy skies. Tonight plunges to minus 17. And here's the kicker. By Tuesday morning, some Interior valleys could bottom out near minus 33 degrees. That's the kind of cold that bites.
But the most dangerous conditions? The North Slope. A Blizzard Warning kicks in this afternoon for Deadhorse and Kaktovik. Winds gusting to 60 miles an hour will whip recent snow into whiteout conditions through Tuesday. If you're up there, stay put.
Looking ahead this week, the pattern stays locked. Monday brings mostly sunny skies statewide, but brutal cold settles in. Anchorage hits 16 degrees. Fairbanks? Minus 5. Lows Monday night crash to minus 8 in Southcentral, minus 26 in the Interior. Tuesday and Wednesday are the coldest days — expect minus 30s and 40s across much of Alaska. Southeast stays milder with lingering snow showers and highs in the low 30s. By Thursday, high pressure builds and skies clear, but temperatures stay well below zero inland.
Out there.
See you this afternoon.
