Good morning! I'm Aaron Jolly. And welcome to the Alaska Weather Podcast — it's Thursday, February 26th.
Folks, this is the kind of cold that doesn't just bite. It claws.
An arctic airmass has clamped down on Alaska. And it's digging in hard. The numbers are brutal, but the wind chills? They're what'll get you.
Here in Southcentral, you stepped outside to minus 5 degrees this morning. But that north wind gusting to 25 miles an hour? It makes it feel like minU S Two6. That's frostbite-in-minutes territory. We climb to 5 degrees this afternoon under sunny skies. Tonight drops to minU S One4.
Now push north to the Interior. Fairbanks hit minus 35 degrees overnight. Wind chills could sink to minus 35 degrees by this evening. Your high today? MinU S One7. Tonight crashes back to minus 35 degrees. This is the kind of cold where your breath freezes mid-air.
Down in Southeast, it's a completely different story. Snow showers are dumping 1 to 3 inches through this morning before tapering off. Highs reach 26 degrees. Tonight falls to 12, but that northeast wind makes it feel like zero.
A Blizzard Warning is up for Isabel Pass through 3 P.M. today. Whiteout conditions from blowing snow. Thompson Pass is seeing gusts to 85 miles an hour. If you're traveling those passes, delay your trip.
Looking ahead.. This deep freeze isn't budging. Southcentral slowly warms into the teens by early next week. The Interior stays locked in the minus 30s and minus 40s through the weekend. Southeast gets more snow Saturday into early next week.
We're gaining nearly 6 minutes of daylight today. Spring equinox is three weeks out. But winter? It's got unfinished business.
Cover every inch of skin if you're heading out. Seriously.
That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow.
Good morning. Alaska. I'm Michael Mosby. Alaska is locked in a deep freeze this morning. And the Interior is taking the worst of it. Fairbanks sits at minus 20 degrees right now. Feels like minus 34 with the wind chill. That's the kind of cold where breathing hurts. You'll climb to minus 5 degrees this afternoon, then crash to minus 31 tonight. By Wednesday morning, some Interior valleys could hit minus 40. Cover that exposed skin if you're heading out — frostbite doesn't ask permission. Down in Southcentral, you're starting at minus 2 degrees with partly cloudy skies. You'll warm to 15 degrees this afternoon under mostly sunny skies. Light northeast winds around 5 miles an hour. Tonight drops to minus 10 degrees. Tuesday brings another mostly sunny day with a high near 11 degrees. Southeast Alaska tells a completely different story — snow. Heavy at times. Good afternoon. Alaska. I'm Matt Mullins. Winter just tapped us on the shoulder with half an inch of fresh snow overnight. Light flurries are still drifting through this morning. But that's the warm-up act. The real cold is waiting in the wings. Down in Southeast, snow showers are rolling through with serious intent — one to three inches by this afternoon, then three to five more tonight. Highs hit 33 degrees today, dropping to 25 overnight. Winds stay calm at five miles an hour. Monday continues the pattern with more snow and highs at 31. Southcentral sees a quick snow chance late morning, then skies turn mostly cloudy. Monday brightens up with mostly sunny skies and a high near 16. Now the Interior. Today tops out at 4 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. Tonight crashes to minus 17 degrees. Monday stays mostly cloudy with a high near minus 5…
Good morning. Alaska. I'm Michael Nally. Step outside and you'll feel winter's grip tightening across the Last Frontier. We picked up about half an inch of snow overnight. And temperatures are hovering around 18 degrees in Southcentral. But folks, that cold you're feeling? It's just the beginning. Down in Southeast Alaska, snow showers are pounding the Panhandle. Juneau and Sitka could see 2 to 4 inches by tonight, with the heaviest bands hitting the coast. Winds are calming after yesterday's storm, but visibility drops fast when those snow squalls roll through. Southcentral sees a chance of snow showers this morning, then skies clear out. Anchorage tops out near 21 degrees with southwest winds gusting to 25 miles an hour. Tonight? We drop hard — down to 3 degrees with north winds. The Interior is where the real cold story lives. Fairbanks struggles to hit 4 degrees today under mostly cloudy skies. Tonight plunges to minus 17. And here's the kicker. By Tuesday morning, some Interior va…
Good evening. Alaska. I'm Michael Nally. That biting wind this morning? it's just a preview. A deep Aleutian low is tightening its grip, effectively splitting Alaska into three completely different worlds today. One region is digging out, another is facing record cold. And a third is getting hammered by hurricane-force gusts. Down in Southeast, a storm force front is pounding the Panhandle right now. Juneau and Sitka are seeing winds gust to 55 miles an hour, with waves up to 30 feet crashing along the outer coast. Here comes 3 to 5 inches of heavy, wet snow by tonight, with another 2 to 4 arriving tomorrow. Temperatures crash from 41 degrees this afternoon down to 26 tonight, but wind chills will make it feel like 9. High Wind Warnings are in effect—this isn't the day to be on the water. Over in Southcentral. Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley are stuck in the snow machine. Light snow showers continue through tonight, adding less than half an inch. The bigger story is the cold. Highs tod…
Good morning. Alaska. I'm Aaron Jolly. Alaska's splitting three ways today. And where you're determines everything. **Southcentral** wakes up to 13 degrees and blowing snow. That north wind at 15 miles an hour is whipping up near-whiteout conditions right now. Snow intensifies through the day, heaviest around 3 P.M., dropping near an inch. Saturday brings more snow showers with a high near 21 degrees. **Interior** is brutal. MinU S Two2 degrees with mostly clear skies. Snow develops after 9 A.M., pushing temperatures up to 11 degrees by afternoon. Tonight's the big story — snow ramps up with 1 to 3 inches and a low near 2 degrees. Saturday continues snowy with another 1 to 2 inches possible and a high near 10 degrees. **Southeast*…
Good afternoon. Alaska. I'm Aaron Jolly. Step outside and you'll feel 8 degrees. That's where we're sitting right now after bottoming out at 3 overnight. But here's the thing about Alaska — we're living three completely different days depending on your zip code. In the next 24 hours. Down in Southeast. Juneau's getting absolutely hammered with rain. You're at 40 degrees right now. And those showers aren't letting up. Tonight drops to 38 before Friday brings the heavy stuff — three quarters to a full inch of rain. Then Saturday afternoon? Everything flips. That rain turns to snow as temperatures crash to 30. Anchorage, you're caught in the middle. High near 18 today with light snow possible this afternoon. Tonight drops to 15. And that's when things get interesting. Snow becomes likely with certainty, plus areas of blowing snow. Friday's the real show — 1 to 3 inches with north winds gusting to 30 miles an hour. Saturday adds another round before things finally settle. Now Fairbanks. Yo…
Good morning. Alaska. I'm Aaron Jolly. Six degrees outside right now, but here's the wild part. Alaska's temperature spread this morning? Seventy degrees. From the Interior's deep freeze to Southeast's almost-spring warmth. In the next 24 hours. Let's start where it hurts. The Interior woke up at minus 27 degrees. Wind chills hit minus 42. That's the kind of cold where your breath freezes mid-air. Sunshine today pushes you to 2 degrees by afternoon. Tonight, clouds roll in with snow showers developing. Friday brings the real action — 1 to 3 inches of snow likely, with highs climbing to 11 degrees. Southcentral starts at minus 5 under clear skies. Wind chills near minus 18 early. Clouds move in by mid-morning. And snow's possible after 9 A.M. You'll hit 17 degrees today. Friday looks snowier — 70 percent chance with 1 to 2 inches and highs jumping to 29 degrees. Now Southeast. Practically balmy. Snow showers early flip to rain by mid-morning as temperatures climb to 40 degrees. Friday b…

That's the kind of cold that bites through any jacket in seconds. Fairbanks climbs all the way to 1 degrees this afternoon under sunny skies. A remarkable 32-degree swing from dawn to mid-afternoon. In the next 24 hours. Down in Southcentral, it's cold but more manageable. Anchorage sits at minus 5 degrees early this morning. You'll reach 17 degrees by late afternoon. Snow moves in after 9 A.M. — just a chance, nothing heavy yet. Southeast Alaska? A completely different world. Juneau hovers near 27 degrees with snow showers overnight. Temperatures surge to 40 degrees today. Rain takes over by afternoon. That's nearly three-quarters of an inch of rainfall possible. Tonight's full moon will shine bright over the Interior. But clouds will spoil the view elsewhere. Heads up for the Alaska Peninsul…
Good morning. Alaska. I'm Aaron Jolly. Step outside and the cold hits you like a physical wall. Interior Alaska wakes up to dangerous conditions. Actual temperatures sit at minus 29. But factor in the wind? It feels like minus 45. That's the kind of cold where breathing actually hurts. You'll want to Dress warmly in layers if you're heading out early. In the next 24 hours. Down in Southeast, a completely different story unfolds. Snow is falling hard. Juneau and the northern panhandle could see 3 to 7 inches through the day. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until noon. Travel will be difficult this morning. But tonight, that snow transitions to a rain-snow mix as temperatures climb into the mid-30s. Southcentral sees some sun today with a high near 11 degrees. But around 7 A.M., wind chills dip to minus 25. The afternoon brings relief as temperatures climb. Tonight drops to minus 4 under mostly clear skies. Here's your heads-up for the week ahead. The pattern shifts late Thursda…
