Michelle's Notes from the Sidelines:

  1. We all want to feel accepted, and that might mean getting involved in things outside of school or work. It's important to find community.
  2. Learn what you can handle and do it with excellence.
  3. Shut out the noise and advocate for yourself.
  4. When we think of disabilities, we immediately think of physical issues, but some disabilities aren't visible.
  5. Focus on the things you CAN do, and allow yourself to feel happy and empowered.
  6. Find solutions for everyday problems. Find what works for you. It's not about overcoming the disability; it's about finding a way around some of the barriers in society.
  7. I can't control other people; I can only control my response and how much time and energy I spend with them and on the problem.
  8. Writing can give you a voice and allow you to forgive.
  9. A disability is only part of a person's identity.
  10. Success doesn't always come in the package you'd expect; it could be better.
