Episode 30: Joe Randene

Author: Greensboro News & Record Sports October 19, 2018 Duration: 41:41
Joe Randene, a U.S. Navy veteran, is on his second tour of Greensboro, and he's already making an impact in the short time that he has been back. Randene is a major weight-loss success, and he's running for others, and he's running to inspire others, too. Randene completed the Allison Woods Halloween Hobble 100-mile race in Statesville on Oct. 6-7, and he'll compete in the Triple Lakes Trail Race 40-mile event in Greensboro on Oct. 20. In this episode, recorded Oct. 10, Randene introduces himself, then we discuss: 3:00: Why would anyone want to run 100 miles. 4:34: His progression toward the distance and his training for the race in Statesville. 10:53: Fueling and nutrition for a 100-mile race. 14:22: The cause he supported in the race. 19:20: How he has fit into the running community in the Triad. 22:38: His decision to start running when he tipped the scales at 330 pounds. 28:50: His service in the U.S. Navy and where life had led him and his family. 33:37: What he has learned about himself through running. 36:06: What's next after you've completed a 100-miler.

Eddie Wooten, who writes the Running Shorts blog for the Greensboro News & Record, brings his conversations from the page to your ears with The Running Shorts Show. Rather than just discussing race times and training plans, Eddie sits down with the people who make up the running community, starting right here in North Carolina's Triad region. You'll hear from local runners sharing their personal stories, the reasons they lace up their shoes, and the challenges they've overcome. The scope occasionally broadens to include voices from across the country, offering a wider perspective on the sport. This podcast is built on genuine conversation, capturing the passion, the setbacks, and the triumphs that define a runner's journey. It’s an extension of the blog, providing a more intimate, audio-driven connection to the sport and its participants. Tune in for regular episodes that feel like a chat with a friend on a long run, full of insight and camaraderie from the heart of the running world.
