The Way the World Works: A Tuttle Twins Podcast for Families
In the dead of night, a 26-year-old Virginian heard hoofbeats on the road to Charlottesville and made a split-second choice that may have saved Thomas Jefferson's life.
When British troops launched a surprise raid aimed at Virginia's leaders, one young Virginian recognized the danger and took action. Brittany tells the story of Jack Jouett, a militia captain who, on the night of June 3, 1781, overheard British cavalry under the command of Banastre Tarleton riding toward Charlottesville, where Governor Thomas Jefferson and the Virginia legislature had relocated after Benedict Arnold's betrayal made Richmond unsafe. Rather than go back to sleep, Jouett saddled his horse and rode roughly 40 miles through the night on back roads, racing the British to reach Jefferson first.
Brittany walks through why Charlottesville became the target in the first place, tracing Virginia's capital from Williamsburg to Richmond to Charlottesville as the war closed in, and explains just how narrow Jefferson's escape really was. Jouett arrived at Monticello just ahead of the cavalry, giving Jefferson enough time to gather family and papers before slipping away, close enough that he could see the British arriving from a mountain overlook as he fled. It's a story Brittany calls one of his favorites from the Revolution, and a reminder that history often turns on the courage of people we've never heard of.
