Lucy Hendricks on Listening, Empathy and Effective Communication in the Gym

Author: Mike Robertson July 5, 2024 Duration: 57:38

If you’re interested in learning more about soft skills, or how to really communicate with your clients and athletes, THIS is the show for you.

Lucy Hendricks is the co-owner Enhancing Life gym in Lexington, Kentucky. Here, she’s created a sanctuary for people sidelined from exercise due to pain, chronic disease, autoimmune issues, or sedentary lifestyles.

Her gym takes an individualized approach, meeting clients where they are physically and mentally, and focuses on removing barriers and reducing anxiety to ease them into fitness.

And today, Lucy and I are going to take a deep dive into the exact skills that has made her gym such a success!

Most people join the industry because they have a passion for fitness and lifting. No one joins the industry because they want to be someone’s friend. – Lucy Hendricks

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

  • The very cool story behind how Lucy got started in the industry (and yes I am biased for this one).
  • How she moved from a “biomechanics coach” to one who focuses more on the soft skills.
  • Why creating the appropriate gym culture was so important to Lucy.
  • Her keys to creating better relationships and improving rapport with your clients and athletes.
  • How to listen and empathize with your people, without taking their problems home with you.
  • Lucy’s thoughts on communicating more effectively both in and out of the gym.
  • Ways to have discussions about pain and injury, without contradicting medical advice they may have received.
  • The BIG Question.
  • Our always popular lightning round where we talk about listening, communication and cultivating a curious mindset.
