280. What to Do When Your Teen Breaks Screen Time Rules

280. What to Do When Your Teen Breaks Screen Time Rules

Author: Therese Connolly July 17, 2026 Duration: 31:01

You created the rule.

You explained the reason.

Your teen may have even agreed to it.

But now they are still scrolling after bedtime, refusing to stop gaming, bypassing parental controls, or sneaking the phone back into their bedroom.

Many parents respond by repeating themselves, raising their voice, or creating a major punishment in the middle of the conflict. Unfortunately, that can turn one broken phone rule into a much larger power struggle.

In this episode of the Single Parenting Reset Podcast, Tess Connolly explains how to respond with calm, predictable follow-through instead of an angry punishment.

You will learn:

  • The difference between punishment and logical follow-through
  • Why consequences should be decided before the rule is broken
  • What to say when your teenager refuses to get off their phone
  • How to respond when your teen argues that the rule is unfair
  • What to do when your teenager bypasses screen time controls
  • Why repeated rule-breaking may mean your plan needs more structure
  • How to repair after yelling without removing the boundary
  • How to reset the next day and give your teen another opportunity
  • How to manage different technology rules across two homes

Tess also shares practical scripts, including:

“The rule was clear. This is not a punishment. This is the follow-through we already agreed on.”

“You can be upset. I’m not going to argue about this tonight.”

“Tomorrow we’ll reset. Tonight, the phone is done.”

The goal is not to control your teen’s technology forever.

The goal is to help your teen build the ability to manage screens, protect their sleep, tolerate stopping, and make responsible decisions as they become more independent.
