S1.41 - What Did Jesus Really Stand For? Jesus Didn't Come to Start a Religion. Here's Why.

Author: Laura Farhy March 15, 2026 Duration: 10:56
What did Jesus actually stand for? As Tolstoy said, the message of Jesus really isn't complicated—but the church, religious institutions, and humanity have overcomplicated it. In this episode, we get back to basics. Jesus taught three core principles that encompass everything: Love God, love others as yourself, and serve others before yourself. That's it. Really. We explore the vineyard parable where a landowner sent messenger after messenger—all killed—before finally sending his son. This reveals why Jesus came: not as a brutal sacrifice to satisfy divine wrath, but to personally embody what God has been trying to tell us all along. Love God means making God your identity system instead of reaching for capitalism's illusions. Advertising doesn't sell products—it sells false identities. You're not buying a car; you're buying the image of success. When God becomes our source of identity, we stop falling into worldly traps. Love others as yourself creates accountability. If you want grace, extend grace. If you want mercy, show mercy. Treat people the way you want God to treat you. Serve others first embodies the "superhero mentality"—always looking for ways to save, support, and encourage others, even at personal expense. Jesus frustrated the Pharisees because they loved their laws more than the people those laws were meant to protect. Sound familiar? We're quick to be offended without considering intentions. We police everyone's behavior instead of monitoring our own. If we all focused on our own words and actions, many of our political and social problems would disappear. In a landscape where many feel spiritually uprooted, Spiritually Homesteading | How to Lose Your Religion & Keep Your Jesus offers a different path. Hosted by Laura Farhy, this podcast moves beyond the familiar terrain of deconstruction to focus on the practical, often messy work of rebuilding a personal faith. It’s built on the metaphor of homesteading-the idea that a deep, sustainable spiritual life requires getting your hands dirty, planting seeds of curiosity, and tending to your own beliefs with intention. This space is specifically for those who feel disillusioned or wounded by institutional religion yet still feel a pull toward the essence of Jesus. Each episode is a conversation for the spiritually curious and hopeful, exploring how to separate cultural dogma from core spiritual truth. When you listen to this podcast, you’ll find honest discussions about navigating doubt, reclaiming personal agency in faith, and discovering what it means to cultivate a belief system that is genuinely your own. It’s about empowerment and ownership, creating a spiritual home from the ground up.
