ABC Radio Australia

ABC Radio Australia is the international broadcasting service of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, aimed at Asia and the Pacific. It began in 1939 as Australia Calling, a shortwave service created to speak to the region in wartime, and it has talked to the Pacific ever since - through shortwave for most of its history, and now through FM relays in Pacific capitals and the online stream.

The programming mixes ABC news and current affairs with music and sport, in English, made for listeners from Port Moresby to Jakarta. Over the years it has broadcast in Tok Pisin and other Pacific languages, and its Pacific Beat program remains a fixture of island journalism. For many in the Pacific islands, Radio Australia has been the most trusted outside voice for generations, and the live online stream keeps that relationship alive for the region and for Australians abroad.
