Dr. John Foubert: Prevention Education Creates Lasting Change

Author: Dr. Michael Ayalon September 26, 2026 Duration: 21:00

Dr. John Foubert has written 11 books, 7 of which deal with the prevention of sexual assault. Dr. Foubert has published several dozen articles in some of the most respected peer reviewed journals in Education, Psychology, and Gender Studies on issues such as sexual assault prevention, pornography use, bystander intervention, fraternities, and religiosity. His scholarly articles have been cited over 3,000 times by other researchers. In addition, he has given over 300 professional presentations to conferences, universities, community and military organizations. In 1998, he and a group of colleagues founded One in Four. He served as President of this organization for nearly 20 years. One in Four was a non-profit organization dedicated to ending rape through means shown to be most effective through scientific research. Dr. Foubert has testified before House of Representatives Armed Services Committee on the issue of rape prevention, and has been called upon by the White House and the Pentagon for his expertise in rape prevention. Dr. Foubert also serves as an expert witness in litigation involving sexual violence. His media work includes appearances on CNN, NPR, in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Chronicle of Higher Education and Time magazine.

In episode 708 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out what drew Dr. Foubert toward studying college students and, eventually, sexual violence prevention, what works in sexual assault prevention, how to talk to men about sexual violence without immediately causing them to become defensive or disengaged, whether prevention education can actually create lasting changes in attitudes and behavior, what is it about certain fraternity cultures that can either increase the risk of sexual violence - or become an incredibly powerful protective factor against it, what did working with the military teach him about changing deeply embedded organizational cultures, what does the research actually tell us about pornography use among young adults, what finally gives someone the courage to challenge their own friends, how to become one of the safest organizations on our campus, and what should sorority women know about effective prevention that moves beyond simply telling women how to protect themselves. Enjoy!
