ABC Illawarra

ABC Illawarra began as 2WN on 6 March 1959, one of the ABC's early regional AM stations, and moved to the FM band in March 1991. Today it transmits from Wollongong on 97.3 MHz with a repeater filling the escarpment's shadows, covering the Illawarra, the Southern Highlands and the northern South Coast.

The audience map reads like a train line south of Sydney: Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Nowra and Bowral - steel city, surf towns and highland villages sharing one frequency. Programming follows the ABC Local pattern of news and talk, with local breakfast and mornings carrying the region's issues from the coal port to the dairy country inland.
